Last weekend I attended the CCC Camp 2007. Head over to the wiki to find out what you missed.
Here you can find a ton of pictures, but they do not remotely describe the feeling you get, when there are thousands of nerds around.
The location was superb. The light shows at night were terrific. Having these old MIGs in the right light looks great. The lectures were quite good, too.
On saturday there was rain, short but heavy. Our tent stood 5cm deep in the mud. But fortunately, inside everything was dry.
We carried it a bit ahead, out of the water. That was the only challenging situation concerning the weather. All in all, I do not want to miss a single second of this event.

I just saw that the guys at FreeBSD just imported pf as of OpenBSD 4.1.
With that in base, there is no need to have an extra port for ftp/ftp-proxy anymore for the 7.0 branch. So I wanted to write a patch to IGNORE the port
for FreeBSD>=7. But then I saw that someone was faster than me.
This all sounds like good news, and indeed it is. Up to a certain point. Originally I had written the port, because FreeBSD lacks libevent, which ftp-proxy needs.
Now the FreeBSD guys actually did import the new ftp-proxy, but they did not import libevent... in reality they are linking it against a local copy of libevent in their
ftp-proxy code. WTF? I would have expected this from Apple, but not FreeBSD!

Boah, krass. Ich war gerade in einer Kaisers-Filiale in Berlin in der Schönhauser Allee, da fand ich folgendes:
Da steht, dass die Alarmanlage mit einer Reizgasanlage gekoppelt ist. Na klar! Ist latürnich nur _für_ die Kunden!!1!
Die Verkäuferin meinte aber das Gas wäre nicht gesundheitsgefährdend. Wer es glaubt...

It's been a while since my last entry here. No, I am not dead (yet).
I finally managed to release my first FreeBSD port to the public.
It is the OpenBSD ftp-proxy(8) program, which was rewritten from scratch by the OpenBSD guys.
I have been waiting for a port for ages now, so I finally came up with my own solution.
The proxy uses the anchor facility of the pf firewall.
This is a very neat design, since you can handle virtually every situation of a firewalled FTP server.
Of course, the program comes privilege separated, as it is OpenBSD best-practice.
Fortunately the daemon user "proxy" is already in the base system for the old ftp-proxy.
A word of warning though: Please do not confuse with the man pages, since both ftp-proxy programs,
the one in ports and the one in the base system, have their man page in section 8.
Do not forget to disable the base system version in /etc/inetd.conf.
The new version comes with a handy rc-script.

Ich wurde heute zum WM-Spiel mitgeschleppt: Deutschland-Schweden. Ich schreib hier das Ergebnis nicht hin, das kennt eh schon jeder.
Aber erstaunlich: es sind verdammt viele Frauen bei den üblichen verdächtigen Fan-Meilen. Erstaunlich. Woran liegt das?
Frauen sind doch sonst nicht so erpicht darauf gut aussehende schwitzende Männer hinter dem Ball her hecheln zu sehen.
Ich glaube ja, dass da alle Mädels nur dem Hype hinterher rennen.
Es ist halt in Fußi zu schauen, sich in Schwarz-Rot-Gold anzuziehen/-malen, und pro Deutschland zu jubeln.

Man darf wieder Nationalstolz zeigen.
Ich bin ja eigentlich nicht so der Fan der Fußballweltmeisterschaft und der alles abmahnenden FIFA [Übersicht]. Aber ein gutes hat es doch.
Den Leuten wird wieder bewusst, wer wir sind. Nein, nicht du bist Deutschland, _wir_ alle sind Deutschland. Und das wird uns in diesen Tagen wieder bewusst.
Da tanzen Leute jubelnd auf der Straße, nur weil "wir" in der Vorrunde ein Tor geschossen haben. Sie werden von der Polizei natürlich sofort abgefüht,
aber das ist eben auch Deutschland. Die BVG hat klein beigegeben und ihre Nachtbusse wegen Autokorsos umgeleitet.
Ich hoffe, dass diese Dynamik, die in Deutschland zur Zeit überall zu spüren ist auch nach der WM noch anhält... ich bin da aber eher skeptisch.

Just a very interesting spot: I just played around with Google a bit and found out that you get different results when searching it for everything.
When changing the top-level domain in that URL, check out the total number of results. You may find that they vary a lot from country to country. NOW: do the same with Tor enabled.
Whoop, the same number of results every time. I guess I need to check out why this happens.
UPDATE: All of a sudden, this does not work anymore. Google must have changed something in their parser. Very odd.
Unfortunately there was too little time to play with that "feature"...

Ich habe heute endlich meine Ersatzplatte bekommen.
In meinem neuen Server ist nach ca. 2 Monaten eine Festplatte abgeraucht. Zum Glück RAID-5. Also erst mal bei Seagate auf die Seite und RMA-Nummer beantragt.
Davon abgesehen, dass Seagate bis auf meine Schuhgröße alles wissen wollte (aber was verlangt man von einem patriotischen US-Unternehmen; Minuspunkt für Seagate), ging das auch reibungslos.
Nun also Platte per Post nach München zur Zentrale, mit Rückschein natürlich. Ich will ja auch wissen, ob das Ding auch angekommen ist. Zwei Tage später bekomm ich eine Mail von Seagate, die neue Platte sei unterwegs.
Waaas ??? Wo ist mein Rückschein? OK, Post eben, ich geb ihr noch 2 Tage. Nix, nada, niente. Kein Rückschein (Minuspunkt für die Post). Das ganze war am 7. April. Heute nun die Platte in der Hand. Woran lag's?
Die Post hat die Platte bei einem Nachbarn abgegeben, mir aber keine Benachrichtigung in den Briefkasten gelegt (Minuspunkt!). Mein Nachbar hat sich dann nachdem er das Paket eine Woche bei sich liegen hat mal selbst gekümmert. Danke!
Fazit: (--) Post, (o) Seagate, da sie offensichtlich doch schnell geliefert haben, und das sogar über Ostern.

Erst mal ein paar kleine U-Bahn-Erfahrungen von heute morgen.
Es ist schon immer wieder verwunderlich zu sehen, wie in unserem Land Autorität funktioniert. Ihr kennt bestimmt diese Schlauch-U-Bahnen, wo man von vorn bis hinten durch laufen kann.
Ich saß also an einem Ende der Bahn und ca. in der Mitte haben ein Paar Kontrolleure die Fahrkarten sehen wollen. Sogleich haben bei mir rings rum alle (wirklick _ALLE_) angefangen ihre Fahrscheine rauszukramen.
Der Kontrolleur war verdammt weit weg und meistens kontrollieren sie eh nur einen Teil dieser Schlauch-Bahnen. So auch diesmal. Der Teil der Bahn in dem ich gesessen habe blieb verschont.
Es war aber erschtreckend zu sehen, dass so ein Kontrolleur, selbst auf eigentlich sicherer Distanz, auf Fahrgäste solch eine Autorität ausübt.

I am just about to compile myself a new kernel for my notebook. Of course, it should contain the latest and greatest (speak: most unstable) features on earth. So this task involves the following:
1. Grab -mm (smurf has set up a git repository. Additionally, I needed to check out all tags in that repository (cogito did not do this by default),
I still need to check out why.
2. Patch in everyhing needful and eye-candy, like vesafb-tng, gensplash, Linux Processor Hardware Control to undervolt the Pentium-M.
